Scaffolding at the Historic Balgray House, Dumfriesshire

Our recent 20-week project at Balgray House demonstrates M8 Scaffolding’s expertise in complex restoration work

Balgray House is a Grade B-listed 19th-century mansion near Lockerbie in Dumfriesshire, renowned for its classical architectural features and extensive estate grounds.

Working alongside Laing Traditional Masonry, we provided essential access solutions to enable skilled craftsmen to carry out vital repairs whilst preserving the building’s historic integrity.

Chimney Access Solutions

The most challenging aspect involved creating safe access to seven separate chimneys across the mansion’s roofline. Our team designed and installed:

  • Custom chimney platforms around each of the seven chimneys
  • Secure ladder access systems for safe passage to elevated areas
  • Roof walkway scaffolding across the historic roof structure
  • Full building-side scaffold for complete elevation access

Adapting to Challenges

Heritage projects often reveal unexpected complexities. When the client began stripping the roof covering, additional repairs became apparent that weren’t visible during initial assessments.

The front entrance area required significant design modifications. What began as standard roof edge protection evolved into a comprehensive protective canopy system, providing weather protection and enabling complete renewal of the intricate lead work around the entrance.

Why Choose M8 Scaffolding?

This project exemplifies our commitment to delivering flexible, professional scaffolding solutions for all types of buildings all over Scotland. Our experience with Grade B-listed properties means we understand the unique challenges of heritage restoration work.
