We were recently asked to carry out specialist scaffolding work inside the old STUC building and former comedy club at 333 Woodlands Road in Glasgow.
The main challenge was space. Normally, scaffolding would be built from the ground upwards. On this job, there simply wasn’t enough suitable space below.
Instead, we designed and installed a cantilever scaffold.
The scaffold was built inside the building, with beams extending through the windows to create a suspended walkway around the outside.
A cantilever scaffold needs careful design. The weight of the scaffold, materials and people using the walkway all have to be calculated.
On some projects, heavy concrete blocks or water-filled tanks can be used as counterweights. Here, space was again limited.
Our solution was to cut through the floors and connect the scaffold back to steel beams within the building.
This allowed us to use the existing structure to safely support the external walkway without relying on the ground below.
